North Conway NH is well known as an international tourist attraction and is home to the nation's first ski school at Cranmore Mountain Resort. This classic New England Village began as a popular destination for artists and outdoor enthusiasts back as far as the early 1800's.
When the Great Falls & Conway Railroad company in Portsmouth, NH extended thier service in 1872 into North Conway, tourism really began to take off.
North Conway is known as the birthplace of American skiing when Austrian Ski Meister, Hannes Schnieder came to Cranmore Mountain in North Conway and opened the nation's first ski instruction school and resort.
Located in the heart of the Mt. Washington Valley, North Conway offers access to some of the best hiking, biking and cross country skiing in the 780,000 acres of the White Mountain National Forest. It also features some of the best rock climbing on the East Coast, with White Horse Ledge and its gem, Cathedral Ledge, a 500-foot cliff overlooking Echo Lake and North Conway Village from the west.
In late September through early October, tourists arrive to see the autumn colors on the surrounding mountains and forests. The Conway Scenic Railroad features train rides that leave from the village's Victorian station. In the winter, the village is the nighttime destination for skiers visiting the area resorts, including North Conway's own Cranmore Mountain as well as nearby Attitash Resort, Black Mountain, Bretton Woods, King Pine, Shawnee Peak and Wildcat Mountain.
In recent years "shopping" has become a favorite reason for visiting North Conway with it's many outlet stores and tax free benefits.
